One of the characteristics that makes of Santo Domingo de los Colorados a very peculiar city is its geography and the amount of redondeles that owns. And it is precisely the latter who describe part of their history, because in each there is something to tell.

Special attention deserves the round known as ‘The Circle of Continents’, the first to be built and the one that has undergone the most changes in the different municipal administrations.

Where the smart pool rests today, the sphinx of the Lion once stood, a work done by the Lions Club, under the consent of the Municipal Council of that time, which was administered by Ramón Chérrez Chávez (+).

Nelson Ribadeneira, a member of the club and former councilor in that period, recalls that since almost all councilors were lions, Including the Director of Planning and the legal adviser, made arrangements for the Municipality to authorize the site where the monument would be placed.

After the order of the ‘lions’ was approved, the construction of the pedestal was carried out, on which the image would rest, which among other things also received municipal financial aid, according to Ribadeneira.

Anecdote

“Every administration, however good it may be, always has its detractors. There were certain citizens who gave themselves to the thankless task of destroying the monument to the Lion. They were always breaking his tail, “says Nelson, with some grace.

This was maintained for a long time until in the period of Darius Kanyat, who assures Ribadeneira that he was also a lion, He believed that the monument should be relocated elsewhere, but that never materialized.

“I understand that he spent a lot of time in the exhibition fair and that in the Municipality they made us assign a site, but the necessary interest has not been given by the current directives. So the work was lost because it could not be restored, “he said.

The Circle of Continents

The researcher Miguel Méndez points out that the entrance to the city was decked out by the Lions Club, by placing the monument of a feline, as a sample of the work they did in Santo Domingo.

Then came the Circle of Continents, in the administration of Darío Kanyat Cortez. At that time the city extended to the school Julio Moreno Espinosa, from the And of the Indian Colorado.

It was the councilmen – Mendez says – who decided to replace the sphinx of the Lion, perhaps because they considered that “perhaps the Lion represented no greater thing, and they had to remove it to locate there the Circle of the Continents. Always thinking of the anthem and the shield to the canton, which speaks of national unity, “he says.

The world map The map

of the five continents was drawn up with the collaboration of several American institutions, including Compañeros de las Américas, which supported many projects in the city, including that one. For that reason, the flags were placed so that the flags fluttered, something that apparently happened only once and went unnoticed.

Mendez acknowledges that the work was very neglected and coincides with his colleague, Heriberto Canelos, In pointing out that the ring served as a stage of political propaganda for several years.

Finally, he adds, in the administration of Hólger Velasteguí completed the design of the monument, which was elaborated in the time of Kanyat.

New Círculo

Completed the period of Velasteguí returned to the Mayor’s office Kléber Paz and Miño Flores, who within its work plan had planned the so-called urban regeneration. Thus in 2005 the maps disappeared and the construction of the New Circle of Continents began.

At the beginning, July 2005, the work had certain complications for its complete execution, due to the lack of delivery of resources to be able to conclude it, but finally, after a year, it was delivered to the citizens.

The New Circle cost the Municipality about 265 thousand dollars, for the amount of details it has, and that make this monument one of the most attractive in the city.
The intelligent pool has a globe that rotates slowly and unnoticed, supported by a small vehicle that through a shaft gives movements of rotation and translation.

The balloon, along with the eight jets of perimeter water and a central one, has become a delight for own and strangers, when they observe its charm carefully. The sphere of the world or planet earth, as many identify it, takes 40 minutes to go around the pool.

To this also adds the set of lights that give life to the change of color of water, The wide and colorful sidewalk of two meters and the ornamentation that it possesses. All these details make the New Circle one of the most modern monuments in the city.

Lion or Circle?

Although the sector is identified by most people as ‘The Circle of Continents’, who live for decades in the sector where it is located are not accustomed to identify it as such.

That is the case of Nelly Chase, for whom remains ‘The Lion’, where cars arriving from Quito had to pass obligatorily.

He says that he never got used to calling the ring by another name, because it is part of the history of the city that opened the doors and of which it forms part. That is the case of Nelly Chase, for whom remains ‘The Lion’, where cars arriving from Quito had to pass obligatorily. He says that he never got used to calling the ring by another name, because it is part of the history of the city that opened the doors and of which it forms part. That is the case of Nelly Chase, for whom remains ‘The Lion’, where cars arriving from Quito had to pass obligatorily. He says that he never got used to calling the ring by another name, because it is part of the history of the city that opened the doors and of which it forms part.
